Song leading

I love helping folks connect through singing, whether they’re seasoned social folk singers or brand new to the tradition. I lead singing sessions and workshops, have a repertoire of songs to share with singers of all ability levels, and facilitate community led singing.

Emma’s song sessions at FolkMadness were one of the absolute highlights of the weekend. Through song, she managed to carry the room through the full range of human emotion. We laughed until we cried, then actually cried, learned brand new songs, and rediscovered some old favorites reimagined.

What stood out most to me was how welcoming and inclusive her leadership felt. Whether someone was a lifelong folk singer or brand new, Emma created a space where everyone could participate fully and authentically. Her sessions were educational without feeling rigid, joyful without feeling performative, and rooted in the spirit of folk music and community. I would consider myself lucky to attend any other camp or event she helps lead.

Lessons

I offer private music lessons, in person in Boston, MA or remotely. I teach songwriting, song leading, singing, and beginner Irish whistle.

Emma has deep knowledge and experience with song writing and how to work collaboratively in the song editing process. In minutes, she helped me rework the lyrical arrangement of a song in a way in which I felt really heard and understood. Working with Emma, I suddenly understood more deeply the trade-offs in the artistic choices I was making and why—to push my song over the finish line and launch it more confidently into the world.

- Aaron Marcus

I’ve gotten Emma’s feedback on both the songs I’ve written. On one, her feedback on the draft led to a major rewrite, and on the other, she showed me a small tweak I could make to clarify what the song was about. In both cases talking to Emma made my songs better and helped them get from draft to finished form.

Software

I have a decade of experience as a software engineer in the music industry. I was the tech lead for iZotope Ozone, and most recently worked for Adobe Podcast. Software that enables musicians to be creative, to bring their music to life and realize the sound in their head in the real world, is my passion. I’m currently in between software roles and looking for new opportunities.
