Ozone 11

Ozone 11 is released! This is the first product I’ve seen through from start to release as Technical Lead, and I’m so proud of what we accomplished. As lead, I was involved in planning and technical strategy, and communicating team status to folks outside the team. I also was still an active developer; some highlights I worked on are the Transient / Sustain splitting, the targeted Ozone Master Assistant, and the Soft Clipper metering in Maximizer.

Ozone 10

Ozone 10 is finally out! My team put together a lot of exciting new features in this update—Impact, a new module focused on micro-dynamics; Stabilizer, a new “magic eq” module; and a soft clipper added to Maximizer that sounds incredible (shoutout to Kurt Werner!) to name a few. I was involved with aspects of all these, but my primary focus for this release was completely overhauling and upgrading the Master Assistant. This was the most challenging and rewarding project I’ve worked on so far.

Neutron “Tame”: Dynamics Preserving Distortion

iZotope just released Neutron 4, a mixing suite with new upgraded assistant technology. I’m not on the team that built Neutron, but teams at iZotope often interact and work together and I was lucky enough to be involved in one specific new DSP feature for this release—the “Tame” button in Neutron’s Exciter module. Designed along with my friend and colleague Kurt Werner, the Tame button is an on/off switch that completely changes the way Neutron’s exciter impacts the dynamics of a performance.

RX 9

iZotope has released RX 9! This release was exciting for me because it was my first time in a leadership role; I was the tech lead for the new Complex Ambience Match feature. Taking it from a brand new prototype through user sessions and building it up to a feature ready to be released was such a rewarding experience.

As a tech lead, I got to work with project management, user testing and iteration, setting the scope of an MVP project, and communication about the project outside of Engineering. I’m very proud of what we were able to make and excited to see where it goes in future updates.

The official RX9 press release is available here.

Dialogue Match

My first product release at iZotope is finally available! Dialogue Match is a Pro Tools AudioSuite plug-in that learns the reverb, EQ, and ambience data of a dialogue recording. After learning, it can apply that profile to other dialogue recordings to make them match. My part in Dialogue Match was mostly working on the Reverb module, which is based on Exponential Audio‘s reverb technology. I implemented an Exponential Audio reverb algorithm in iZotope’s codebase, tested and listened to it, and built the user interface in the final product.

Megaverb—New Goodhertz Plugin

After a long wait, we have finally released a new plugin at Goodhertz! Megaverb is a gritty reverb based on 1980s digital reverbs, with intuitive controls and a gate for easy gated reverb fun. We had Jennifer Hsu interning with us over the summer, and she took the reverb in Lossy and expanded it into a full-fledged plugin.

I was involved in the design of the Gate section in Megaverb, especially the transient based detection mode and the overall gate smoothing and character. I also added the metering for Gate Sensitivity, helped with documentation, and sang two bars from “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” for a demo on the product page.
